From the moment you arrive at Grootbos, only two hours from Cape Town on our Whales and Overberg Tour, and you are greeted by the friendly staff, you know you’re in for a treat. Over 2000 hectares of magnificent fynbos and understated luxury – what more could you want?
Whether you stay at the Garden or Forest Lodge, you have stunning views of Walker Bay, you’re surrounded by beauty, pampered by the staff, with a wide choice of activities – including the thrill of shark cage diving!
A typical stay can include horseback riding through the property, whether you’re an experienced rider or not this is the perfect setting for a magical ride. The views and scent of fynbos will remain with you forever. A drive through the property with a knowledgeable nature guide in a 4×4 vehicle is also a great experience. Grootbos guides will show and explain the huge variety of plants – with almost 800 species and some occurring only in this region, it’s a feast for the senses.
There are various walks on the property that you can do either alone or with a guide, or you can walk on the pristine and unspoilt Walker Bay Nature Reserve beach. The Klipgat Cave with its tiny cove and freshwater spring, and used by man some 90000 years ago, is just a few minutes away. A series of steps will take you down into this large cave with spectacular views.
The rocks near the cave at De Kelders make the perfect setting for whale watching. These magnificent animals come extremely close and you will be entertained for hours as they breach and blow and frolic in the water just a few metres below.
All this activity will make you eager to return to your suite to enjoy the beautifully appointed accommodation. Nothing has been spared to ensure comfort and the decorators have excelled at tasteful understated luxury. Sit on your balcony with a sundowner and watch the sun go down before heading to the dining room for a delicious six-course meal prepared by the superlative chefs.
After all this tranquility and luxury you may want to practice responsible tourism by visiting the Grootbos Foundation where you can play your part by planting a tree. You’ll receive its GPS coordinates so you can keep track of your tree’s progress once you’re home.
There are many lovely reserves in South Africa, just as there are many luxury lodges, so what makes Grootbos so special? It’s hard to explain but imagine the perfect combination of an eco-paradise in 5-star luxury surroundings in one of the Western Cape’s most beautiful fynbos-rich areas.
